I’m spending this week at Little River Canyon, just outside Fort Payne, Alabama, assisting in a Rappel Master certification course at True Adventure Sports. This course is designed to certify new master instructors in various aspects of the high-angle industry, and I have the privilege of assisting with it twice a year. Each time, it proves to be an incredible and enriching experience.
One of the unique aspects of this program is the deliberate incorporation of sleep deprivation into the already physically demanding training regimen. This method is not just about pushing the body to its limits; it’s also about testing the resilience of the mind and navigating the complex terrain of one’s internal mental landscape. The combination of physical exertion and mental fatigue forces participants to confront and overcome their limitations, fostering a deeper understanding of their capabilities under stress and the importance of mental fortitude in high-stress environments.

Comfort is the enemy of progress and achievement! As Master Pedro Sauer often said, “You have to get comfortable being uncomfortable,” and I couldn’t agree more. When you regularly place yourself in challenging situations, even if they are ones you have to create for yourself, you begin to develop a resilience that others may lack. Over time, what most people see as a high level of discomfort becomes your new normal. This is where true growth happens.
By consistently exposing yourself to adversity, you build a kind of mental and emotional armor. You start to view challenges not as obstacles but as opportunities to grow stronger. The benefits you gain from them, while real, are limited if they are not followed up with regular, ongoing practice.
Instead of relying solely on these occasional challenges, I recommend sitting down and developing a plan, just as you would if you were starting a new workout routine at the gym. This plan should include regular opportunities to push yourself out of your comfort zone and confront discomfort head-on. You can structure this plan around any methodology that resonates with you—whether it’s through martial arts, physical fitness, outdoor adventures, or any other discipline that challenges you.
The key is to ensure that your plan is consistent and that it progressively overloads your current level of comfort. Just as you would gradually increase the weight or intensity in a physical workout to build strength, you need to gradually increase the level of challenge in your mental and emotional training. This could mean setting increasingly difficult goals, tackling new and unfamiliar tasks, or regularly placing yourself in situations that test your resolve.
