I’ve had the honor of collaborating with the Warrior Poet Society Team to develop an extensive defensive tactics program. This program is meticulously tailored to meet the specific needs of today’s armed citizens, ensuring they are prepared for a variety of scenarios. Our goal was to create a program that not only complements the firearms training programs developed by John and Paul but also enhances them, providing a holistic approach to self-defense that blends with your firearms tactics.

As many of you are aware, most existing defensive tactics programs often feel like replications of traditional and current martial arts, lacking innovation and real-world applicability. Recognizing this gap, we were driven to develop a program transcending the conventional. We aimed to craft something uniquely suited to the nuances of our current environment and societal landscape, a program that integrates the intricacies of our legal system.

This initiative was born from a desire to address the limitations found in standard martial arts programs, which frequently overlook societal elements such as legal ramifications and culturally relevant defense mechanisms. Our program seeks to fill this void, offering insights and strategies beyond the basics to provide comprehensive, context-aware defense training. It’s designed to answer the pressing questions left unaddressed by traditional martial arts, ensuring participants can confidently navigate the complexities of modern self-defense. This exploration led to the development of the Mat To Muzzle Program, a unique offering now available through WPS. 

Ever since the inception of Mat To Muzzle, one of my ambitions has been to participate in the firearms training sessions led by John and Paul. This week, I achieved that goal by participating in the Pistol 1 and Pistol 2 courses under the guidance of coach Paul Perkerson. The experience was exceptional, offering two days filled with extraordinary training. A highlight of my profession is the opportunity to travel across the US and engage in various firearms training programs. Marksmanship is an area I’m particularly enthusiastic about advancing. With this context, these courses stand out as among the finest I’ve had the privilege to join. They are meticulously crafted and excellently executed; these guys definitely set a high standard for firearms training. I can see why the guys got Instructor Of The Year at the Gundies during the Shot Show this year. They have built a fantastic training experience. 

During the Pistol 2 course, an aspect that particularly captured my attention was the force-on-force “thought experiment” introduced to the students. This segment of the course provided us with a simulated glimpse into what an actual firearms-related ambush might entail. Adhering to the principle that “you don’t know what you don’t know,” this exercise illuminated various aspects I was unaware of. The instructional approach was designed to enable us to independently evaluate and determine effective strategies, enhancing the learning experience by allowing us to observe fellow students experimenting with different tactics and also engaging in these explorations ourselves. Through this process of trial and variation, we gradually distilled which tactics were most effective. The focus shifted to identifying actions that could reduce the likelihood of fatal outcomes in high-stakes situations. We discovered ways to “die less often.” 

Participating in this exercise enabled us to discern which tactics significantly enhanced our survival chances and which did not. Coach Paul adeptly connected these insights to the upcoming lessons in the Pistol 2 class on the flat range, illustrating their practical applications. This revelation was particularly enlightening for everyone involved, offering a fresh perspective on the fundamental skills we had honed over the past two days. Despite my training background, this was a viewpoint I had yet to appreciate fully. Thus, the experience was invaluable in providing a comprehensive understanding of our open-range training objectives, enriching my overall grasp of the subject matter.

A distinct insight gained from this training was the critical link between disengaging from a potential threat and creating distance to use a firearm or decide to confront and neutralize the threat with physical force. I’ve come to refer to this pivotal moment in my programs as the “Critical Distance.” This concept is a cornerstone of the Mat To Muzzle Program, where we delve into its importance and application. The comprehension and implementation of Critical Distance vary among students, influenced by their individual experiences, physical abilities, and prior defensive tactics training.

In the Pistol 1 and 2 courses, we explored the actions necessary when breaking contact to create space for firearm engagement. Conversely, the Mat To Muzzle Program addresses scenarios where advancing towards the threat to apply physical force or control becomes imperative. During the Pistol 2 course, we discovered that the decision-making process in these moments often hinges on the distance from the threat at the time of engagement. This critical juncture in a confrontation serves as the connecting thread between the firearm and physical control or engagement aspects of our training, highlighting the integrated approach of both classes.

The journey from concept to implementation with the Warrior Poet Society Team has been rewarding. The collaborative effort has resulted in the Mat To Muzzle Program, a training blend of defensive tactics and firearms training that addresses the complex landscape of modern self-defense. Our exploration into the nuances of real-world applicability, the integration of legal considerations, and the emphasis on the principle of Critical Distance has set a new standard in personal defense training.

The experiences gained through participating in the Pistol 1 and Pistol 2 courses have enhanced my understanding and highlighted the importance of continuous learning and adaptation in the face of evolving threats. The program’s innovative approach, which bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, ensures that individuals are trained and genuinely prepared for the realities they may face.

The force-on-force exercises and the focus on Critical Distance have been pivotal in shaping a training paradigm that considers all facets of an encounter, from the initial decision to engage to the final actions taken to ensure safety. This holistic view fosters a deeper comprehension of self-defense, emphasizing the importance of situational awareness, legal implications, and using physical and firearm-based defensive tactics effectively.

Our collective journey underscores a shared dedication to empowering individuals through comprehensive, realistic training methods.
