Taming your ego is one of the personal skills that should be on everyone’s life lesson list. It is especially so when you are considering getting into martial arts. Humility is an essential life skill that everyone should maintain in life. Having humility means you can absorb those lessons that life will send your way at some point on the journey.
For myself, the academy is one of the best atmospheres to learn and maintain the skill of humility. The ability to tame the ego and be humble will often help you avoid possible injury.
“I think the hard thing here is seeing the truth. To see the truth, you have to get your ego out of the way because your ego doesn’t want to face the truth.”
– Naval Ravikant
The Jiu-Jitsu mat will put you in situations where you will have to deal with individuals that will be bigger and better than you. These moments also lead to powerful opportunities to learn and grow. Just as in life, Sometimes your opponent will become your teacher. So as the saying goes, leave your ego at the door on the way in, keep the white belt mentality and come to learn.
