Training Weekend Tips
How To Get The Most From Your Time At The Academy
Every event is a little different, but the following notes will help you arrive prepared, train intelligently, and make the most of your time at Atlanta Martial Arts Center.
Arrival
Arrive Early When Possible
Alan is usually on the mat about an hour early. There are no guarantees, but this has been his habit at the academy for many years. If you arrive early, there is a good chance he will already be there.
Food
Eat According To Your Needs
Whether you eat before training is up to you. Everyone is different, and your choice may depend on your body, your schedule, and the type of training event you are attending.
Intensity
Expect The Intensity To Vary
Training intensity depends on the event. A hands-on training camp may be more active. An instructor conference or educational event may be less physically intense and more focused on teaching, structure, and understanding.
Pace
Set Your Own Pace
Always set your own individual pace. There is no need to push yourself beyond what is useful. You are here to gain education, skill, and understanding, not to run yourself into the ground.
Clothing
Bring Extra Clothes
It is a good idea to bring extra clothes to the academy. You never know exactly what kind of activity you may be doing, and it is useful to have something dry to change into if you get wet from training.
Breaks
Expect Adult Education Breaks
Alan usually builds short adult education breaks into the day. These breaks give people time to rest, hydrate, process information, and prepare for the next block of training.
Mat Etiquette
No Street Shoes On The Mat
Street shoes are not allowed on the mat. Mat shoes are acceptable if they are non-marking and used only on the mat. Wrestling shoes, soft-soled training shoes, or clean designated mat shoes are common options.
Recovery
Plan Recovery Around The Event
Dinner and recovery plans will depend on the type of event. Some events are more physically active, while others are more educational. Give yourself enough margin after training to eat, rest, and recover.
Filming
Do Not Film Alan Without Permission
Filming Sifu Alan is strongly prohibited unless he verbally tells you it is allowed. If you want a visual note after learning something, have someone record you and your partner performing the material.
Video Archive
Event Material Is Often Archived
Events at the academy are often recorded, edited, and added to one of the online video archives. Students looking for additional study resources can visit the Online University.
Updates
Check Event Emails Before You Arrive
We usually try to send an email the week of the event with any last-minute updates. Please check your email before traveling so you have the most current event information.
