5 to 9 PM
In my teaching approach, five distinct study areas come into play when someone is on the ground, with grappling being just one of them. This event is designed to introduce all five areas of study, with a special focus on the counter-grappling and ground-fighting curriculum. It’s crucial to understand that concentrating solely on one aspect of ground combat means missing out on several vital components. The primary objective of this event is to bridge this knowledge gap, providing you with a more comprehensive understanding of the diverse strategies and techniques applicable in ground situations.
The material presented in this course is the same as what I offer through Baker Defensive Tactics to a diverse clientele including protection agents, law enforcement personnel, and military operatives.

CORSE TOPICS
In this phase of our training, we’ll immerse you in the grappling world by introducing the most commonly encountered ground positions. You’ll start by mastering essential defensive skills to protect yourself in these positions against aggressive attackers. The focus will then shift to methods and techniques for creating space and time, crucial for implementing more effective defensive actions. These techniques are particularly valuable for quick disengagement and returning to a standing position, an important strategy in self-defense scenarios.
Moreover, understanding and managing time and distance becomes even more critical when incorporating weapon systems into your defense strategy. The nuances of Counter Grappling and Ground Fighting are vital for real-life self-defense situations, as staying grounded in a grappling match, especially in the presence of loved ones or multiple adversaries, is often disadvantageous.
The course encompasses five distinct study areas on the ground, of which grappling is just one aspect. We’ll explore each of these areas, teaching you how to intelligently and effectively apply these tactics in a self-defense context. This comprehensive approach ensures that you’re well-equipped with the knowledge and skills to handle various ground combat scenarios effectively.
Here’s a condensed list of bullet points of some of the topics covered:
- Understanding Ground Positions: Introduction to common ground positions in a grappling environment and defensive strategies against violent attackers.
- Intro to Grappling: High-percentage fundamentals in various control positions like Side Control, Mount Control, In The Guard, and From Guard Control.
- Creating Distance and Time: Techniques to effectively create space and buy time for more potent defensive measures.
- Exiting Ground Environment: Methods to quickly return to a standing position during a ground confrontation.
- Weapon Integration: Incorporating weapon systems into ground fighting scenarios, considering time and distance.
- Comprehensive Ground Study: Exploration of five key study areas on the ground, with a focus beyond just grappling.
- Intelligent Utilization of Tactics: Effective use of ground tactics in self-defense situations.
- Fundemental Ground Mechanics: Alignment, movement, breathing exercises, and the Bridging and Shrimping Series.
- Ground Fighting Techniques: Strategies for defending against a puncher in both closed and open guard positions and basic defensive postures.
- Counter-Grappling: Understanding what the grappler needs to survive and how you can use that against them in a self-defense situation.
THE STORY
My exposure to the bodyguard and protection agent industry, as well as my experience instructing in law enforcement and military sectors, led me to a crucial realization. There was a significant gap in ground fighting training. The existing training methods were not fully aligned with the practical needs of these professions.
Acknowledging this discrepancy, I embarked on developing a specialized curriculum to address these evident and critical gaps. Years of teaching this material to professionals and their valuable feedback on what effectively works in real-world scenarios shaped my current curriculum into what it is today. Initially exclusive to my tactical training business due to its specialized nature, the high demand has now led me to offer these courses publicly. This shift marks my commitment to equipping a broader audience with these essential ground fighting skills and tactics.
Coach Alan’s
THE FIVE AREAS OF STUDY ON THE GROUND
GRAPPLING
Grappling refers to techniques that involve close combat; it is used to gain a physical advantage over an opponent, often by taking them to the ground and controlling or submitting them with various holds and maneuvers. Grappling does not typically include striking but instead concentrates on the use of leverage, grip, and body position to defeat an opponent.
ANTI-GRAPPLING
Anti-Grappling involves studying grappling techniques to understand and utilize a grappler’s requirements, with the objective of turning these techniques to one’s advantage during a fight.
GROUND FIGHTING
Ground Fighting focuses on the strategic use of positioning and striking when facing a grappler or a standing opponent, often employed as a means to circumvent grappling.
DOG BOXING
Dog Boxing is centered on the concept of “Out-Of-Position” Fighting, which diverges from most traditional fighting systems that rely on specific stances or positions to execute techniques. Instead, Dog Boxing emphasizes mastering the mechanics of various positions across different environments. This approach ensures that a practitioner is never caught off-guard and is always equipped to deliver powerful and effective strikes, regardless of their positioning.
WEAPON GROUND FIGHTING
Ground-focused weapon fighting distinctly differs from grappling with a weapon. While the latter has gained popularity recently, there are more effective strategies for weapon-based combat on the ground. To effectively handle a weapon in such scenarios, maintaining distance, achieving a superior angle, and staying ahead of your opponent in timing is crucial. These elements are not typically afforded by grappling techniques, which created the Ground-focused weapon fighting curriculum.
